In addition to carbohydrate-rich nectar, hummingbirds need a reliable source of protein. You can help by using your fruit scraps and peels to encourage a ready supply of fruit flies. Banana peels are the best — just tuck them inside and hang near the hummingbirds’ favorite flowers or next to a nectar feeder. The red plastic deters wasps and bees, and a wrap-around perch gives birds a place to both save and recoup energy. With 15 feeding ports, there’s room for a whole flock to get the nourishment they need. Clean and refill the feeder every three weeks to ensure hummingbird health.
